How to Improve Sleep and Why


I'm sure I'm not the only one that has problems sleeping. One of my main causes of me being extremely tired throughout the day is that I find it really hard to fall asleep. It's the most frustrating thing when you plan to have an early night, and it turns into a late night just because you've had your eyes closed for over an hour. Been there done that right?

I'm not the healthiest person ever when it comes to eating and exercising. I do a lot of walking and I try to eat healthy dinners but that's about it really. Oh and I drink almond milk now (I'm so proud because I used to hate the taste of it). Everyone says that healthy eating and exercising can benefit your mental health. I'm sure it does. However sleeping is just as important. Being tired throughout the day not only can make you more miserable and make you not want to do anything, but may make you feel more stressed than you would normally. I'm not a mental health expert, but I can definitely notice it myself when I haven't had enough sleep.

I've been feeling extremely down recently for many reasons which is one of the reasons why I can't sleep, but then I've also been feeling down because of lack sleep. It just goes round in a circle! I feel like fixing your sleeping pattern and getting enough sleep is one of the hardest things to do. I can say I am extremely lucky for the brand ResMed to send me their "S+".

ResMed have award-winning medical devices and software applications that diagnose, treat and manage sleep apnea, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and other chronic diseases. Their aim is to cut medical costs by helping others identify these, as well as help with sleeping. They seemed like a really genuine and good business which is why I was so excited to try this machine. Well 'machine' sounds scary but it's not really like that at all.

Right, let me explain what this does first before I get into what I think of it. It senses your breathing I know right how?!), like it's not touching you or anything it's crazy! It recognises the four stages of sleep, analyses your sleep and gives you a sleep score at the end. It tells you how much different types of sleep you've had, how many hours etc. and a few uses, it gives you recommendations on how to improve your sleep! Also, it senses the lighting and noise in your room. Like what?! That's the main gist of it but you can also record memos on the app and listen to calming sounds which is just perfect to falling asleep quicker.

So what do you do exactly? You download the app, fill out a profile which asks you all sorts of questions to enable them to know your lifestyle. You put the small machine on your bedside table facing you, and when you are ready to go to sleep, you click on 'start sleeping' on the app. The app will then ask you a few questions like how much caffeine have you had today, how stressed were you today and how much exercise you did. This all helps with giving you any recommendations too.

I have been using this for over 3 weeks now. I can honestly say I have been really enjoying using this. It amazes me at how accurate it is, like how does it know when your inhaling and exhaling?! It has given me a variety of tips on how to get a better nights sleep, and I feel like I have actually made some progress. Obviously my sleep still isn't perfect, but this has made a difference. Knowing what your sleeping is like and why it may not be as good as it should be, helps you no matter what, let alone get given advice! The app is extremely easy to use and it's all so easy to set up that anyone could do this.

The fact that it also senses what your room conditions are like overnight such as lighting, noise and temperature, makes it feel even more personalised to you than it already is. It pretty much takes everything into account! Apart from all the good stuff, I feel like this could get even better. The app is really easy to use, however it does look like an old style app if you know what I mean, it doesn't cause a problem or anything, but I feel like the design of the app could be updated. Also, the recording feature on the app and being able to listen to calming sounds could be moved to the actual machine. I think it would work so much better if it came from the actual product, especially the calming sounds.

As I'm always honest with you guys, I wanted to mention the more negative comments about it. However, I feel like the negative comments are definitely outweighed by the positive, as it really is something incredible. I would definitely recommend looking into this if you have problems with sleeping, however just be aware that it may not be able to solve all your problems!
